Real-world asset tokenization has exploded to $30 billion in on-chain value, yet DeFi protocols are capturing only $2.47 billion of that total, revealing a massive composability gap in the sector.
DefiLlama's tracking shows the disconnect plainly. Nearly 92 percent of tokenized RWAs sit dormant outside DeFi lending markets, yield protocols, and collateral vaults. The tokenized assets exist on-chain but operate in isolation, unable to flow through the interconnected lending and borrowing layers that define DeFi's utility.
This fragmentation stems from several structural issues. Traditional finance-backed RWA projects prioritize custodial control and regulatory compliance over open protocol integration. Projects like Ondo Finance, Franklin Templeton's tokenized money market fund, and Maple Finance's institutional credit offerings generate substantial value but deliberately limit composability with broader DeFi ecosystems.
The RWA space has attracted institutional capital through platforms like Centrifuge, which tokenizes invoices and mortgages, and Clearpool, which connects institutional borrowers to on-chain lenders. Yet these protocols operate largely independently rather than nesting into DeFi's core money lego infrastructure.
Price action reflects this limitation. While individual RWA tokens have performed well, the sector lacks the velocity characteristic of fully integrated DeFi primitives. Bitcoin sits near $95,000 and dominates institutional crypto narratives, while Ethereum's DeFi dominance faces erosion from Solana and Base momentum.
The gap matters because DeFi's strength relies on composability. Every smart contract layer builds on prior layers, creating exponential value generation. When $27.5 billion in tokenized assets remain siloed, they forfeit arbitrage opportunities, yield stacking, and leverage multiplication that drives DeFi returns.
Bridging this gap requires RWA protocols to prioritize oracle integration, cross-collateral acceptance, and flash loan compatibility. Some projects recognize this. Maple has begun connecting to broader protocols, and Centrifuge actively participates in
