U.S. regulated perpetual futures just launched, opening a multibillion-dollar opportunity that crypto platforms are sprinting to capture while Wall Street's heavyweights pump the brakes. The $90 trillion global derivatives market now has legitimate onshore access for retail traders.
Crypto exchanges and proprietary trading shops see the move as a gold rush. They're already building out perpetual futures infrastructure, knowing retail demand for leveraged trading runs deep in crypto. Platforms like dYdX, Bybit, and others have spent years perfecting perpetual mechanics on-chain. Now they're positioned to service U.S. traders through compliant offerings.
Traditional banks, however, are taking a measured approach. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and other mega-cap institutions recognize the revenue opportunity but cite three blocking issues. Liquidity remains fragmented across dozens of new venues. Regulatory clarity from the CFTC and SEC still has gray zones, particularly around custody and leverage caps. Infrastructure—clearing, settlement, and risk management systems—needs hardening for institutional flows.
The timing matters. Perpetual futures attract leverage-hungry traders willing to take 20x, 50x, or higher positions. The crypto industry remembers 2023's blowups: FTX's exchange collapse, Three Arrows Capital's unwind, and cascading liquidations that torched retail portfolios. Banks don't want their names attached to the next cascade.
Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs changed Wall Street's calculus on crypto exposure. Perpetual futures present a different animal. Leverage amplifies both gains and losses. Retail traders burned on 100x liquidations generate regulatory heat. Banks will wait for clearer rules on maximum leverage, position limits, and default procedures before deploying serious capital.
The market structure itself favors agile players. Crypto-native firms understand orderbook dynamics, flash crashes, and circuit breakers better than traditional equity houses. They'll claim early market share. By the time JPMorgan's compliance teams finish their reviews and infrastructure upgrades land, the best retail flow may
