As projects proliferate around "proof of humanity" systems and digital identity verification, the real question isn't whether we need better ways to confirm who people are online. It's whether the industry will learn that winners simplify the problem, not multiply the solutions.

Recent developments in identity verification frameworks illustrate a growing trend: adding another layer of cryptographic infrastructure to solve what is fundamentally a social trust problem. The logic is seductive. If we can create an unforgeable, decentralized proof of personhood, we solve spam, deepfakes, bot networks, and fraud in one elegant move. The technical ambition is admirable. Here's what the Web3 community often misses: users don't actually want more infrastructure. They want fewer friction points.
