The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) ordered Kalshi, the prediction markets platform, to halt operations across a broad range of event contracts. The regulator blocked Kalshi from offering markets on federal elections, congressional votes, Supreme Court decisions, and other sensitive political outcomes.

Kalshi built its business model around prediction markets tied to U.S. political events. The CFTC's order dismantles that core product line. The agency cited concerns over market manipulation, insider trading risks, and conflicts with existing regulations governing binary options contracts.

The platform must implement geofencing technology to enforce the restrictions. Initial geofencing blocks access by August 19, with a full GeoComply multi-source system required by September 2. This prevents U.S.-based users from accessing restricted contracts while potentially allowing international users continued access to those markets.

Kalshi fought the CFTC's authority over prediction markets in court. The startup argued these contracts differ from traditional derivatives and qualify under the Dodd-Frank exemption for certain event contracts. The exchange won a preliminary court victory in 2023, allowing it to launch political prediction markets. That win proved temporary.

The latest order represents a major setback for the company and the broader prediction market ecosystem. Polymarket, Kalshi's primary competitor, operates overseas and faces less direct U.S. regulatory pressure, though the CFTC has scrutinized its operations. Polymarket continues offering U.S. election markets through workarounds targeting international users.

Kalshi's restricted product categories include markets on federal elections, congressional votes, Supreme Court decisions, presidential actions, agency rulemakings, and federal appointments. The ban effectively removes Kalshi from the political prediction market space where it concentrated substantial liquidity and user engagement.

The company retains access to sports, weather, and economic indicator prediction markets. These segments represent a smaller revenue opportunity compared to the political markets that drove platform adoption.

The enforcement action signals the CFTC's determination to restrict U.S. domestic prediction market platforms from offering contracts tied to government decisions or political outcomes.
