Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, received regulatory approval to trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies under the country's new crypto framework. The bank now holds both custody and exchange status, positioning it to offer digital asset trading to its 110 million retail clients through existing mobile applications.

Sberbank plans to list Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT (Tether) on its platforms. The approval marks a major expansion of crypto access in Russia's financial system, connecting the nation's largest retail banking network to digital assets. Sberbank's dual licensing under Russia's updated crypto law enables it to both hold customer funds and facilitate trading operations.

The move reflects evolving regulatory approaches to cryptocurrency in Russia. Rather than banning digital assets outright, the Russian government established a legal framework permitting licensed financial institutions to operate crypto services. Sberbank's approval demonstrates the framework's application to major banks handling hundreds of millions of retail customers.

The bank's existing app infrastructure positions it to reach a massive user base immediately upon launch. This contrasts with dedicated crypto exchanges that must build customer bases from scratch. Sberbank clients gain direct access to Bitcoin and Ethereum trading through familiar banking interfaces rather than separate cryptocurrency platforms.

USDT inclusion allows customers to trade stablecoins alongside pure cryptocurrencies. Tether's role as a primary stablecoin across crypto markets makes it a logical addition to Sberbank's offerings. The bank's crypto expansion occurs as traditional finance continues integrating digital assets into mainstream services globally.

Sberbank's approval represents the first major Russian bank to formally enter cryptocurrency trading under the new regulatory framework.
